Sites of national importance

If you check a map, you will be able to see where the most impressive sites and the most beautiful hamlets, villages and small towns are.

But the best sites are not only romantic towns of mediaeval origins (like Grüningen and Gruyères) and sleepy farm villages (like Boswil and Bönigen). The most interesting sites in Switzerland - objects of national importance according to the ISOS - also include:

  • factory sites where we can trace the development of our industrialised regions in the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • large-scale cultural landscapes where buildings - small clusters of farmhouses, stalls and barns - are inseparable from the valley floor or slopes.

All sites of national importance in Switzerland are listed on this website. For information on sites of regional or local importance, please contact the Federal Office of Culture (FOC).
