In Switzerland, the following sites are currently inscribed as cultural heritage sites on the World Heritage List: the Old City of Berne, the Convent of St Gall, and the Benedictine Convent of St John in Müstair (all listed in 1983); the three castles, defensive wall and ramparts of the market town of Bellinzona (2000); the cultural landscape of Lavaux, vineyard terraces (2007); and the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes (2008).
In the natural heritage domain come the sites of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch (2001), Monte San Giorgio (2003) and Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona (2008). The Federal Office for the Environment is the body responsible for matters in the area of natural World Heritage.
