The Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of national importance (ISOS) designates and documents Switzerland’s most valuable settlements of nationwide significance. The inventory is not limited to a few prominent locations but includes modest and at the same time always characteristic hamlets, villages, small towns and cities, which have developed Baukultur features and qualities over the centuries. They all reflect the settlement diversity of our country. They are an important source of regional and local identities and make a key contribution to people’s well-being. An authentic site of local character is also an important location factor for tourism.

Switzerland’s appeal as a tourist destination stems to a large extent from the beauty of its scenery and Baukultur. The Confederation’s tourism policy thus aims to maintain and enhance the country’s natural and Baukultur qualities over the long term. To that end, it relies mainly on coordination and cooperation among the partners. Together with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) is therefore establishing a broad-based programme to make this possible and operate within broader circles.
