Barbara Frey was born in Basel in 1963. She has been working as a stage director continuously for 30 years, and from 2009 to 2019 she was also the first female director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich. She studied German and philosophy in Zurich and played the drums in various Swiss bands before joining the Theater Basel in 1988 as a musician and assistant stage director. She started out as a stage director in the independent scene, and went on to work at major theatres in Germany. She is currently in the middle of a three-season tenure (2021–2023) as artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale and also regularly directs productions at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The Swiss Grand Award for the Performing Arts / Hans Reinhart Ring continues the tradition of Switzerland’s most prestigious theatre award, which has been presented by the Swiss Association for Theatre Studies (SGTK) since 1957 and honours an individual or institution from the Swiss performing arts scene.
