Awards go to Jasmin Morand’s dance production “LUMEN” and Alexander Giesche’s theatre production “Man in the Holocene” at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. The June Johnson Newcomer Prize is won by Mirjam Gurtner.

Starting in 2021, awards are presented each year to one dance and one theatre production from the previous year as part of the Swiss Performing Arts Awards. In the dance production competition, the Federal Dance Jury selected “LUMEN” by Jasmine Morand (b. 1977) from a total of 31 entries. The creation for 13 dancers from her company Prototype Status, which she set up in 2008, is performed in a sophisticated stage setting that employs light, reflections and dance to play with the audience’s perceptions. From the shortlist of 22 productions seen at the Swiss Theatre Encounter 2021, the Federal Theatre Jury selected “Man in the Holocene” from the Schauspielhaus Zürich, directed by Alexander Giesche (b. 1982), as the outstanding theatre production of 2020. The “visual poem”, based on the story of the same name by Max Frisch, takes as its theme the fragility of our planet. Mirjam Gurtner (b. 1980) has been chosen as winner of the June Johnson Newcomer Prize from among 39 entries in the competition. The socially committed choreographer’s current work, “Play”, is a new departure for her.
